Ramos: ‘It’s fantastic that the Spaniards are coming!’

WorldSBK debutant Roman Ramos enthusiastic about season ahead.

No less than six Spaniards are on the entry list for the 2015 season, with Ramos poised to make his first WorldSBK appearance riding a Kawasaki ZX-10R. FIM CEV Repsol Moto2 Champion of 2013, the rider from Santa Maria de Cayón in Spain’s northern Cantabria region will be racing with the GoEleven team, with the assistance of 11-time race winner and 2003 championship runner-up Ruben Xaus.

“When I ended the Moto2 World Championship last season, I didn’t know exactly what I would be doing but I knew it would be practically impossible to carry on there,” Ramos admits. “Ruben (Xaus) then asked me to do something in Supersport and I liked that idea a lot. Then came then the Superbike chance with GoEleven, again through Ruben; I hadn’t expected it and I didn’t have to think twice.”

Having experienced a character-building Moto2 season last year, Ramos now hopes to channel his disappointment into a positive start to 2015.

“I struggled a lot in Moto2, but also learned a lot,” the 24-year-old continues. “I do think that will help me to enjoy Superbikes more. This won’t be an easy year because the level in Superbikes is very high, but I’m hoping to learn a lot and especially across the opening few races. My bike isn’t an official Kawasaki, but I do think it will be good and, with the help of Ruben, we can do great things in the future.

“Incidentally, I think it’s fantastic a few Spaniards will be on the grid this year. With people like Nico Terol and Jordi Torres around, who are both good friends and great personalities, I’m very sure we are going to have a fun year!”

Only Great Britain has more riders on the grid than Spain this year, with seven riders to six. Alongside Ramos, Terol and Torres, the other three Spaniards set to compete are Santiago Barragan, Toni Elias and David Salom who led the EVO bikes in 2014.
